I Was Quite Athletic And Was The Games Captain In Addition To Being A Prefect – Mrs Anne Oseni

We would deliberately make noise by opening our desks and banging the covers till a teacher came in

I attended Methodist Girls High School from January 1946 to December 1950. I joined the school in Form 2. Then we had a 6-year curriculum. The school was located in and around Broad Street. It extended from Marina to Broad Street.

I enjoyed my stay in MGHS. I enjoyed playing basketball during break time. I was quite athletic and was the Games Captain in addition to being a Prefect while I was in the school. We did play pranks, but they were innocent pranks. We would deliberately make noise by opening our desks and banging the covers till a teacher came in. School rules prevented us from speaking vernacular during school hours, but we enjoyed speaking once school was over. We were very happy in school and in one another’s company. Many of us used to walk to school. I lived in Obalende and walked to school. Girls living in Ebute-Metta also walked to school on the Island.

MGHS made a big impact on my life. I will celebrate my 90th birthday in December 2020. The person that I am today has been partly moulded by the period I spent at Methodist Girls’ High School. This is, in addition, to influence from home and other people, but a great deal of who I am is from the school I attended as an adolescent. The values I imbibed in the school have served me well throughout my life. I am very proud of my alma mater.
